This year’s Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, which provides a vital platform and continued support of the artistic community, was co-ordinated and led by celebrated British Painter David Remfry RA who, working with the other Summer Exhibition Committee members, explores the theme Only Connect, taken from the famous quote in Howards End by E.M. Forster.
The Summer Exhibition’s annual party continues to be a highlight of London’s Summer social calendar. Opening the doors to the world’s most joyful art exhibition, guests including;
Charli XCX, Lila Moss, Stanley Tucci, Vick Hope and Munroe Bergdorf were joined alongside some of the world’s leading artists to support and celebrate art and creativity.

Once again, the RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival was a bonanza of glorious gardens and fabulous flowers, all of which filled the grounds with the heady scent of summer.
Best Show Garden – America’s Wild, presented by Trailfinders & Visit the USA
Best Get Started Garden – The Wildlife Trusts: Renters’ Retreat, by Zoe Claymore
America’s Wild, a garden taking visitors on an immersive journey through the flora and landscapes of the USA, has won the top award on the opening day of RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival 2023.
Designed by Emily Grayshaw, Imogen Perreau Callf & Jude Yeo of Inspired Earth Design, the garden, which was presented by Trailfinders & Visit the USA, celebrated a double win as it picked up Best Show Garden and the Best Construction for a Show Garden award. The contractor for the gold-medal winning garden was Yoreland Design.
The Wildlife Trusts: Renters’ Retreat was awarded the Best Get Started Garden prize. Zoe Claymore’s gold medal-winning design highlights how gardens in rental properties, which account for around one in three households in England, can be transformed for the benefit of tenants and the environment.
The Best Construction for a Get Started Garden award was given to the Landform Mental Wealth Garden by Nicola Hale, a sensory oasis offering a place to sit and relax and experiment with herbal tinctures and remedies picked from the gold-winning garden.
Of the Show Gardens, the other to pick up a gold medal was Paul Hervey-Brookes’ Cancer Research Legacy Garden.
Popular plantswoman and TV personality Carol Klein was honoured with the RHS Iconic Horticultural Hero award. Born in Walkden, Lancashire, Klein was an art teacher who became a professional grower and went on to exhibit at more than 200 RHS shows, including RHS Chelsea where she has won six gold medals. Her design for this year’s festival is a celebration of plants, inspired by nature and packed full of take-home ideas to inspire everyone to garden and have a go at propagating their own plants.

London’s Olympia recently welcomed more than 4,400 visitors through the doors for the overseas property exhibition A Place in the Sun Live! Organisers brought together a huge range of exhibitors who were all on hand to offer advice to house hunters, wherever they were in their overseas property purchase journey!
What’s On Magazine went along to experience the show.
It was fantastic to be joined by so many enthusiastic house hunters, who all came prepared to take the next step towards making their dream of owning a property abroad a reality.
Exhibitors had flown in from 19 countries to help visitors with every aspect of their property purchase journey – they included estate agents, lawyers, tax and wealth specialists, mortgage brokers, currency specialists, residency experts and more!
Alongside a huge range of exhibitors, we were joined by the stars of Channel 4’s A Place in the Sun TV show! Jasmine Harman, Laura Hamilton and special guests Ben Hillman and Craig Rowe appeared on stage to tell packed audiences about their experiences on the TV show, and to share their top tips for house hunting and buying abroad.
As well as talks with the presenters, there was a jam-packed schedule of seminars taking place across four stages, all weekend! On the main Hub visitors heard about everything from how and where to buy a property in Spain, to planning a permanent move abroad and more.
Hosts were joined by a number of expert panellists including lawyers, tax experts, currency specialists and estate agents. They were on hand to offer advice and to answer some brilliant live questions from our audience.
Those searching for properties in France were spoilt for choice in the French Village which had a full schedule of seminars – these in-depth sessions provided great insight and practical advice on all aspects of buying and moving across the Channel.

22nd – 24th September.

Garden for patients recovering from spinal injury wins Best in Show at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2023
RHS Chelsea Flower Show has awarded Best in Show to Harris Bugg Studio for Horatio’s Garden, a wheelchair accessible garden for patients recovering from spinal injury.
Horatio’s Garden is the first fully accessible garden to win Best in Show with wheelchair access being fundamental to the whole design process and is the second time the design duo has won the coveted award for a garden at the world famous flower show.
On receiving Best in Show, Charlotte Harris and Hugo Bugg said: “It’s unbelievable and still sinking in. It’s a really special garden for us because of the nature of the charity. Horatio’s is a charity about gardens and how they help on journeys of healing and so it feels absolutely right that it should win Best in Show. We are delighted for the charity, and we hope it helps to raise the profile of the incredible work they do and are delighted it will live on to form the heart of Horatio’s Garden Sheffield after the show.”
On selecting this year’s winner, RHS Chair of Show Garden Judges Marie-Louise Agius said: “The standard of the Show Gardens this year was extremely high. What particularly stood out about The Horatio’s Garden was how the design had been driven by the end user, to be experienced by spinal injury patients from a bed or wheelchair. The garden is uplifting, beautiful, and considered and for someone who has had a life altering spinal injury it will provide them with a wonderful sanctuary. The brief and the garden was delivered at an exceptional level.”
The entry by six-time Gold medal winner Cleve West, The Centrepoint Garden, was awarded the prize for Best Construction in the Show Garden category. The garden, which West described as a “very visceral metaphor for young people facing homelessness” and featured a half demolished building at its centre and upended tree roots, was praised for its impressive construction.
In the small garden categories, Best in Shows were awarded to Charlie Hawkes’ The National Brain Appeal’s Rare Space Garden in the Sanctuary Gardens category, and to Rosemary Coldstream for Feels Like Home in the Balcony and Container Gardens. The Talitha Arts Garden, by Joe and Laura Carey, won the top award in the All About Plants category.
Demonstrating the skills and expertise of the growers in the Great Pavilion a total of 51 Gold Medals were awarded with Best Exhibit going to Kells Bay House & Gardens. First time exhibitors The Caley Brothers received the New Design Award for their display of mushrooms – the home grown edibles collection.
Plant of the Year was also awarded to Agapanthus Black Jack’ (‘Dwaghyb02’) amongst a shortlist of 18 plants and the RHS Sustainable Product of the Year went to Lindum wildflower turf.
